Our Area - What's Around Town!
South Jefferson County is your link to six townships, twelve quiet villages and hamlets with its many businesses throughout the southern area. In our area, we also are home to the beautiful Southwick Beach State Park, with it's wonderful stretch of sand beaches and gorgeous parks along the Seaway Trail. Our Area is also known for excellent inland fishing. Throughout the season, fishermen can be seen casting in area streams for that trophy steelhead.
Our region is dotted with many picturesque working farms, beautiful walking trails and acres of country recreational lands. South Jefferson County is supported by our agriculture industry, with dairy farming being the major source. Nineteenth century life in agriculture/marine setting is depicted in our local museums.
South Jefferson is a four season community, in the Spring you will find herds of deer and fields of turkeys grazing along the highway and in the fields. Adams is the birthplace of J. Sterling Morton, founder of Arbor Day. We celebrate with an Arbor Day Festival and Craft Fair at South Jefferson Central School. Summer brings camping, swimming, boating, hiking, golf and much more for your enjoyment. Each summer we play host to hundreds of bargain hunters with the Chamber's Bargain Day Sales throughout the area. Fall is the time for all avid deer and turkey hunters to descend on the area. Our four season community does not rest in the winter. With many "lake effect storms", we have excellent cross-county skiing and snowmobiling along the Tug Hill Plateau. Dog sled racers and cross-country skiers arrive each winter for their favorite sports.
You can enjoy this versatile area year around.
